Ring sizes

There are different ring size measurements. You must know how to measure it, and general knowledge on rings measurements to get the ring suitable for you. But, before starting, we must mention that there not only different sizes, but also different types of sizes. So, let’s start with different sizes for rings.

Ring sizes and measurement types

There are mainly 2 types of measuring a ring. One type is measuring internal circumference of the ring. On the other hand, there is also different type of measuring. Second type is measuring type where the diameter of the ring. There are also types of tools. One of these types is measuring by a paper, plastic, or metal ring sizer. There are also ring sticks. They are tools to measure a ring, mainly made by wood, plastic, aluminum, delrin or of different materials. There a re 2 main standards in ring sizes.

International System

ISO system defines standard ring sizes if the inner circumference of the ring, and it measures in millimeters. France, Germany, Austria, Scandinavian countries and other countries in Continental Europe uses this standard . You can find more about this system if you enter here.

Traditional and regional systems

Countries that doesn’t use ISO system in measuring ring size use their own systems or internal diameter. Both types of measurement uses millimeters. Most of the regions uses their own traditional or regional ring size system.

  • North America: In the United States of America, Mexico and Canada, ring sizes differ by 0.032 inches or 0.81 mm. These measurements are taken by internal diameter. These are equivalent to 0.1005 inches or 2.55 mm. of internal circumference.
  • Ireland, United Kingdom, Australia: Starting with 1987 BSI updated the metric system so that one alphabetical size division equals 1.25 mm of circumferential length
  • India, Japan, China: Ring sizes in these countries are not correlated with diameter or circumference.
  • Russia: In Russia sizes are rounded up to whole or half numbers. For an example 18.78 mm equals 19 mm.
  • Italy, Spain, Netherlands, Switzerland: It is little bit strange in these regions. Ring sizes are specified as the circumference, but they add extra 40 mm. Like 20 mm equals 60 mm
