Handmade Necklace
When you think about handmade necklace, what comes to mind? Maybe a diamond? A fancy gold chain? Maybe some gemstone studs? Chances are you’ve seen necklace in movies and on TV, maybe even on Instagram, and you think to yourself, “I could make that…”
Is there something about the glitz and glam of Hollywood that makes you think you can’t pull of a stunning piece of handmade necklace? You can! All you need is a little inspiration, a few trusted tools, and some of your favorite semi-precious stones.
How to Make a Handmade Necklace From Scratch
If you’ve ever seen the movie Elizabeth or Game of Thrones, you know that a lot of Hollywood’s most stunning pieces of jewelry were made entirely by hand. Now, you can bring that same level of craftsmanship and meticulous attention to detail to your own home! And what’s more is you can make amazing pieces that are completely unique to you. It just takes a little bit of inspiration and some tools that you might not have in your own home. So let’s get started. Let Create your own handmade necklace.
Make a rough draft first
Don’t worry, this isn’t a process that requires a fancy degree in handmade necklace making. So first things first – make a rough draft. This is where you put your ideas down on paper. You can either draw, write, or just use a paint program like Photoshop. Once you’ve got your rough draft, you can start to fit your design into smaller pieces. So if you’ve got a big chunk of metal that you need to work with, you can start by cutting strips of metal; each strip will become a pattern for one side of the necklace. Cut several strips, enough to form the basic pattern for both sides. You can also use a torch to brighten up the metal or take a look at it in different colors. This allows you to see how different elements might look together before committing to a solid style.
Create the clasp

Our handmade necklace is almost finished. Now that you’ve got your metal in a good light, you can start to fit your design into smaller pieces. Once you’ve got the basic pattern for both sides, you can start to fit the clasp on. You need to figure out the perfect placement for the clasp. Also, make sure that the clasp is comfortable when worn and that it doesn’t move around too much. If it does move around a lot, then either the clasp is too small or it’s been design is bad. Go back and adjust it until you’ve got it just right. Once you’ve got the clasp fitted, use a torch to heat the metal and make any last adjustments. This is also a good time to shine your workmanship by giving it a quick polish.
Make the wings
Just because your handmade necklace isn’t a traditional piece of jewelry doesn’t mean that you need to be limited to using the pieces previously mentioned. There are hundreds of options available for you to personalize your necklace. Maybe you’ve always wanted to try your hand at winged dogs (aka flamingos) or perhaps you have a specific emblem that you’d like to use. Whatever your creative mind can come up with, you can put it on paper and turn it into a 3D model using Google Charades. It’s a great way to design unique pieces that are perfect for you.
The Final Step of creating a Handmade Necklace: Buff And Polish
Once you’ve got your design completed, it’s time to bring it to life. Start by taking off the clasp and giving it a quick polish to remove any oxidation that might have occurred during the making process. You can use an oil-free wipe to remove the residual dust on the surface of the metal. Once the clasp is clean, you can move on to the last stage of bringing your creation to life. This is where you bring back the shine by giving it a quick polish with a buffer and cloths. A properly executed polish can make or break a piece, so take your time and do it right. After you’ve got your final product, you can store it in a cool, dark place for future use. And there you have it! Now you have your own handmade necklace!
